Apple Store Robbed by Rebels

October 11, 2011 in Really!? by Dj M$ney

Moped life on the open road. Unbridled asphalt rebellion. The thrill of the throttle, wind in your hair, roar of the engine beneath you. Breaking into an Apple Store to steal a bunch of iPads. Rebels.

Seven English idiot moped-riders smashed through a London Apple store early this morning, snatching Macs, iPads, and “other similar devices,” according to police. The Next Web’s Matt Brian says the motorized mischief was witnessed by a blogging gentwho’s been camping outside the store for publicity: “Really annoying as I was having an early sleep and was out for the count.”

Who is the sadder figure here: a guy stealing iPads on a moped, or a guy sleeping outside of an Apple Store by choice? Trick question: the most miserable of all are the two who got caught:

A 16-year-old boy and 21-year-old man were arrested at the scene on suspicion of burglary. Property, believed stolen from the store, was found in bags in their possession, Scotland Yard said.

NYPD Uses 10 Year Old Technique To Subdue Protesters Of Wallstreet!! Wrong?

October 6, 2011 in Really!? by Matthew Creole

(CBS News)

In New York City, the police department is trying to make sure the Wall Street protests don’t get out of hand, as they have from time to time in Europe. The NYPD is using a controversial technique and CBS News correspondent Jim Axelrod reports on how that works.

Last Saturday afternoon, Occupy Wall Street protesters gathered at the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge where police warned them not to go any further.

“If you refuse to leave, you’ll be placed under arrest, and charged with disorderly conduct,” a police official told the crowd through a bullhorn.

Protesters continued to march anyway with officers in front–in what looked like a police escort. CBS News producer Paula Reid was covering the story.

“And then there was a barricade about a third of the way across — police vehicles,” she said. “And then at the back of the protest, they unraveled an orange gate, and put that across the back of the protest.”

Seven hundred protesters were penned in and then arrested.

700 arrested at Brooklyn Bridge protest

“Did you feel in any way that the police department acted in a way that was dishonest?” asked Axelrod.

“No, I wouldn’t call it dishonest,” said Reid. “But I would say it’s contradictory. You say, ‘Don’t walk on this bridge because it’s illegal, you’ll be arrested.’ But then you walk with them, you lead them.”

The technique is called corralling. Protesters are isolated by police and left to either stand for hours or be arrested. It’s not new — Washington, D.C. police used it in the spring of 2000 when protests got out of hand.

Former New York City Police chief William Bratton of Kroll and Associates said the idea is to diffuse tension.

“As far as the idea of corralling and arresting that group,” he said, “after a notification was made and after they remained on the roadway, I see nothing wrong with it.

“We have come a long way from the days when hoses and dogs were routinely used to control crowds, and the use of batons was routine.”

The courts will sort out whether what happened last Saturday on the Brooklyn Bridge violated constitutional protection to assemble. One lawsuit has already been filed.

I Guess Living In A Garbage Can Just Isn’t Poor Enough On Sesame Street!!

(NYTimes)
The familiar address of Sesame Street is about to get a new visitor, one who could surely benefit from the sunny days and friendly neighbors there. For a prime-time special to raise awareness about hunger faced by American families, Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit organization that produces “Sesame Street,” has created a new Muppet character named Lily, a 7-year-old girl representing one of the 17 million American children that the Department of Agriculture estimates are “food insecure,” meaning their access to food is limited or uncertain.

“We thought long and hard about how do we really represent this from a child’s point of view?” Jeanette Betancourt, Sesame Workshop’s senior vice president for outreach and educational practices, said on Monday morning in a telephone interview. “We felt it was best to have this new Muppet take this on in a positive way and a healthy way.”

Ms. Betancourt said that she and her colleagues spent time considering all the elements of Lily’s character that would make her realistic but empathetic to young viewers: her style of dress, her voice performance and even mannerisms, like her tendency to look down at her feet rather than make eye contact when she is speaking to other characters.

“She wants to talk about this topic,” she said, “because she knows it will help many other families and children, but it isn’t an easy topic to talk about in the first place.” Still, the tone of the special, called “Growing Hope Against Hunger,” is meant to be hopeful as Lily visits a community garden and encounters popular Muppets like Elmo, Rosita, Bert and Grover as well as the celebrity guests Brad Paisley and Kimberly Williams Paisley.

For now, Ms. Betancourt said, the Lily character is planned only for the special, which will make its debut on Sunday on PBS. Previous “Sesame Street” specials have addressed subjects like economic insecurity and children with parents in the military.
